The land-locked country of Botswana, home to the famous Okavango Delta, offers some of the best wildlife-viewing and birding on the African continent. Camps are small and intimate, with most located within private concession areas that ensure guests a personal experience of wild Africa.
Our tour takes us to the dry Central Kalahari Game Reserve where sightings of plains game, as well as their predators such as Cheetah, Lion, and Leopard are regular. Smaller predators such as Aardwolf and Honey Badger are also common, and usually far more approachable than in other areas, while birds such as Martial Eagle, Secretary-bird, and bustards are also well-represented.
The vast network of inland waterways, islands, woodland, and floodplains of the Okavango Delta shows a very different face of this diverse country. We visit two areas within this spectacular wetland system so as to experience the array of habitats and associated mammals and birds that are found here.
Large carnivores such as Lion and Leopard are still common, and they are joined by African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, and a range of water- and woodland-loving antelope species such as Red Lechwe, Greater Kudu, and the magnificent Sable Antelope. Birds are abundant, and species such as Wattled Crane, Pel’s Fishing-Owl, and a host of beautiful kingfishers, bee-eaters, and rollers ensure a constant parade of color and activity.
Our visit in March coincides with the autumn migration of birds as they head further north in Africa, or back to Europe and Asia to breed. Temperatures are pleasantly cool, and game-viewing opportunities are excellent.
Moderate to excellent accommodations; some long travel days; travel by small plane charters and game-viewing vehicles; limited walking; cold to cool mornings and evenings, and beautifully mild-to-warm daytime temperatures.
