Magellanic Penguins, Falkland Islands

Our most thorough Falklands voyage ever includes seven islands; exceptional seabirding and marine mammal viewing; and shore excursions to view landbirds and large colonies of penguins, albatrosses, and shags.

For many years, we have dreamed that our cruises to Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands would include more time in the Falklands. Typically, our Antarctica programs offer no more than two days here, this despite the fact the Falklands offer a greater diversity of birds than Antarctica, and breeding bird colonies of equal spectacle.

We are thrilled to announce that the dream has become a reality! In the fall of 2018, partnering with Oceanwide Expeditions, we will operate our first-ever Falklands—only voyage, aboard the M/V Ortelius, an eight-night circumnavigation of the entire archipelago that includes marvelous seabirding and visits to seven different islands.

The Falklands are a true wonderland of South Atlantic wildlife, the breeding grounds for huge colonies of Black-browed Albatross and colonies of Imperial Cormorant and King, Gentoo, Magellanic, and Southern Rockhopper penguins. Via cruise ship, Zodiac outings, and shore excursions, we will immerse ourselves in the raw beauty of the islands and their special wildlife. Activities include visits to Steeple Jason Island, site of the world’s largest Black-browed Albatross colony; Saunders, with its marvelous mixed colonies of albatrosses, penguins, and shags; Carcass, with wonderful landbirding; and East Falkland, home to the capital, Port Stanley, and a growing population of King Penguins. In addition to big spectacles, we’ll seek an array of range-restricted birds including Falkland Steamer-Duck, Ruddy-headed Goose, Rufous-chested Dotterel, Striated Caracara, and White-bridled Finch.

Optional pre- and post-cruise extensions on the Argentine mainland will be available.

All travel, accommodations, and meals aboard ship; conditions aboard ship good; plenty of cruise time and shore excursions; walking conditions vary from sandy beaches to loose rock with occasional inclines; some rain likely with temperatures ranging from the upper 30s–40s (°F).
