The final swing of our South Africa tour is an optional extension to the temperate grasslands of the interior plateau, to the tiny community of Wakkerstroom. Like our Great Plains, much of this region has been converted to agriculture, and the native grasslands are greatly diminished. So too are the special endemic birds of the area, but great efforts have been made to protect them. Here we will seek the unique Southern Bald Ibis, elegant Blue Crane, Blue Bustard, Ground Woodpecker, and several larks, chats, and pipits, plus a wide variety of waterfowl and other waterbirds.
Excellent accommodations; excellent food; moderately paced with little walking; comfortable vehicles; temperatures pleasantly cool to warm, possibly cold.
