In this Region: Autumn Grand Manan
Grand in size and rich in wildlife, noble Canada occupies the northern tier of the North American continent as a beautiful and enticing destination. VENT has operated tours to Canada since the early 1980s, sharing its birds and other wildlife with a great many tour participants. Though such a large country presents a challenge to cover, our schedule of tours samples the very best of Canadian birding, landscapes, and ecosystems.
One of our most complete and truly outstanding departures is our Churchill and Southern Manitoba tour. Offering everything the traveling birder could ask for, this tour spans the length of the province of Manitoba, from the prairies and pothole marshes in the far south, to scenic Riding Mountain National Park and the vast spruce forests of central Manitoba, and to amazing Churchill on the shores of Hudson Bay way up north. This tour routinely accrues a bird species list in excess of 200, recording some of the most sought-after species in North America, including Sharp-tailed Grouse, Great Gray Owl, Connecticut Warbler, Smith’s Longspur, Baird’s Sparrow, and many others. This tour is one of our all-time favorites and we recommend it to everyone!
When the weather turns colder and the birds of summer have long since departed, Churchill takes center stage as perhaps the world’s greatest polar bear viewing location. Our Polar Bears of Churchill tour is an excellent short tour to view one of nature’s most fascinating creatures. Travelers are guaranteed of intimate, once-in-a-lifetime encounters with these massive animals as they gather on the shores of Hudson Bay in anticipation of the coming winter. Participants on this popular tour travel in a private tundra buggy reserved exclusively for VENT. This trip is a photographer’s dream, but birders should take heart! Our tours often encounter such northern specialties as Willow Ptarmigan, Gyrfalcon, Snowy Owl, Northern Shrike, and Hoary Redpoll.
A summer or fall visit to the northeastern Maritime provinces is a splendid way to experience the serene beauty of Atlantic Canada. Our Newfoundland and Nova Scotia tour is an absolute delight, featuring glacially sculpted coastlines, spectacular seabird rookeries at Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve and Whitless Bay, expansive sub-Aarctic tundra, dramatic forests and promontories of Cape Breton Highlands National Park, and a wonderful assortment of breeding flycatchers, vireos, thrushes, warblers, and tanagers.
Our Autumn Grand Manan tour is always a popular choice for those looking to ring in the fall season away from home. Early September is a prime time to feel the pulse of fall migration in the Northeast, as thousands of seabirds, shorebirds, and landbirds are all moving south. Experience superb seabirding and whale- watching on the Bay of Fundy may also include exciting encounters with the endangered northern right whale.
Situated only an hour east of Detroit, Michigan, on the shores of Lake Eerie, Point Pelee sits as one of North America’s premier migration hotspots. Our Point Pelee and the Kirtland’s Warbler tour includes four full days exploring Point Pelee and nearby Rondeau Provincial Park in search of migrant songbirds, before concluding with a visit to the breeding grounds of the endangered Kirtland’s Warbler in north-central Michigan. This tour regularly records more than 30 species of warblers.
As part of our Winter Washington & British Columbia tour, you’ll travel to extreme southwestern British Columbia for exciting wintertime birding. Outside the city of Vancouver, the snow-capped Pacific range provides a gorgeous backdrop to our time in the region. Planned activities include a tremendously scenic ferry ride to Vancouver Island, searching for Gyrfalcons and Snowy Owls along the shoreline of stately Boundary Bay, and a lengthy visit to the globally-important George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary.
