George Gerdts taught middle school math and science for 40 years, retiring in 2009. He owns Pandion Nature Tours through which he leads a number of classes and day-trips around Bainbridge Island, Washington, where he has lived for the past 35 years. His interest in birding started at an early age in northern New Jersey. He has since traveled extensively in all of the United States, South America, Central America, Australia, Africa, and Europe. George conducted breeding-bird surveys for the US Fish and Wildlife Service for 20 years. He also collates bird records for Kitsap County in Washington State. His keen interest in local birds led to the implementation of a monthly survey at Restoration Point on Bainbridge Island, which has been on-going for the past 15 years. George has led field trips and tours in Washington State for Seattle Audubon, Kitsap Audubon, and Bainbridge Island Parks for over 30 years. He has also led and co-led several VENT tours in Washington State over the years. He has a keen interest in the botany and the natural history of Washington State. George presently lives on Bainbridge Island with his wife, Mary Anne.
