Remigio “Remi” Grefa is a birding and naturalist guide whose roots run deep in Ecuador’s Amazon Basin. Born and raised in the Kichwa community of Añangu along the Napo River, Remi grew up immersed in the rainforest, developing a close connection to its biodiversity from an early age. His interest in birds began when he observed visiting birdwatchers at a nearby lodge and set a goal to learn the names of local species in English—something he would go on to achieve through dedication and hands-on experience.
As his community developed the Napo Wildlife Center, a pioneering ecotourism project, Remi joined the operation after high school. He worked his way through a range of roles—from maintenance and hospitality to boatman—gaining invaluable exposure to visiting birders and naturalists. These experiences provided the foundation for his guiding career, allowing him to build both field knowledge and language skills.
In 2009, Remi expanded his experience aboard the Manatee Amazon Explorer, working along the Napo and Aguarico rivers. By 2017, he became an official birding and naturalist guide at Napo Wildlife Center, where he continues to lead today. He lives in Dayuma with his wife, Lola, and their 2 daughters, Kayana and Wita.
