Barry Lyon’s passion for the outdoors and birding began in his childhood in southern California and deepened during his teenage years, when he attended several VENT/ABA youth birding camps—experiences that led to his long association with Victor Emanuel Nature Tours.
Barry earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he studied history and political science with an emphasis on environmental and development politics. He joined VENT as a tour leader in 1995, launching a career that has taken him to destinations around the world.
After moving to Austin, Texas, in 2004 to join the office staff, Barry’s role steadily expanded. He was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2014 and became Chief Executive Officer in 2023. While he still leads a few tours each year, his focus is now on business management, customer relations, and company leadership. A former board member and past president of the Travis Audubon Society, Barry remains dedicated to conservation and environmental education. He lives in South Austin with his wife, Brooke Smith.
