Brazil: Classic Pantanal
Tour Overview
The Brazilian Pantanal is one of the great wildlife spectacles of the world. Spreading across the vast floodplain of the Paraguay River, this mosaic of seasonally flooded savannas, marshes, gallery forests, and dry grasslands supports an astonishing concentration of birds and mammals. In many ways, the Pantanal evokes Africa in both scale and spectacle—yet it remains uniquely South American in character.
Our journey is timed for the dry season, when receding waters draw wildlife to shrinking rivers and lagoons. Jaguars patrol exposed riverbanks, Giant Otters fish openly in clear channels, and Capybaras, Caimans, and Marsh Deer gather at the water’s edge. With over twenty consecutive successful tours, our search for Jaguars has become one of the defining highlights of this experience.
Birding here is both abundant and remarkably easy. Jabirus tower over wetlands, Maguari Storks stride through shallows, and Southern Screamers call across open marshes. The incomparable Hyacinth Macaw—one of the world’s largest and most spectacular parrots—flashes electric blue across the sky. Bare-faced Curassows stroll along lodge clearings, Red-legged Seriemas patrol open fields, and a rich supporting cast of ibises, raptors, kingfishers, woodcreepers, and passerines ensures that nearly every outing produces memorable encounters.
Several nights are spent aboard a comfortable river vessel with air-conditioned cabins and private baths, placing us at the heart of prime Jaguar habitat. Morning boat excursions focus on finding Jaguars and other riverine wildlife, while afternoons bring relaxed cruising, superb photography, and close views of birds along forested banks.
This shorter program retains the essential elements of our longer Pantanal Safari tours—comfortable lodges, excellent food, relaxed midday breaks, and immersive wildlife viewing—while offering a concentrated and unforgettable experience in one of the birdiest and most charismatic landscapes on the planet.
Ecosystems Experienced
The Pantanal is the world’s largest tropical wetland, shaped by the annual flood pulse of the Paraguay River. During the dry season, open savannas, shrinking lagoons, river channels, and gallery forests create a dynamic mosaic where wildlife concentrates along remaining water sources. Roadside grasslands host rheas and seriemas, marshes brim with storks and herons, and riverbanks become prime territory for Jaguars and Giant Otters. The interplay of water and grassland defines both the spectacle and accessibility of this extraordinary ecosystem.
