Colombia: Bogota, Eastern Andes & The Magdalena Valley
Tour Overview
Colombia’s reputation as the world’s richest birding destination is well earned. With more than 1,900 recorded species, this vibrant country offers an unparalleled range of habitats—from snowcapped peaks and páramos to tropical forests and river valleys—each bursting with life.
Our route crosses a spectacular transect of the Eastern and Central Andes, offering a complete panorama of Colombia’s avian richness. Beginning in Bogotá, we’ll ascend into misty mountain parks where Green-bearded Helmetcrest, Apolinar’s Wren, and Silvery-throated Spinetail thrive in the páramo. Descending the lush eastern slope near Villavicencio, we’ll encounter a vibrant mix of Andean, Amazonian, and Llanos species including manakins, antbirds, and colorful tanagers.
Continuing west, we’ll traverse the Magdalena River Valley, one of Colombia’s most important biodiversity corridors. Here, endemics such as Apical Flycatcher, Velvet-fronted Euphonia, Tolima Blossomcrown, and White-mantled Barbet await amid dry forest and foothill habitats. In the montane forests near Ibagué, we’ll seek dazzling hummingbirds and songbirds framed by the snowcapped peaks of Nevado del Tolima.
The journey concludes at Río Claro Reserve, where limestone canyons and emerald rivers shelter Oilbird, Beautiful Woodpecker, Sooty Ant-Tanager, and Antioquia Bristle-Tyrant—a fitting finale to this celebration of Colombia’s avian wonder. Throughout the tour, we’ll enjoy comfortable accommodations, expert leadership, and the joy of exploring a nation whose greatest treasure may be its extraordinary biodiversity.
