Colombia: The Central & Western Andes
Tour Overview
Colombia’s Andean highlands offer one of the most spectacular birding experiences anywhere in the world. Along this sweeping route through the Central and Western Andes, we’ll trace the spine of the mountains from Medellín to Cali, moving through elevations that nurture dazzling arrays of hummingbirds, tanagers, and antpittas—many found nowhere else.
Our journey begins near Medellín, where endemics like Red-bellied Grackle and Yellow-headed Manakin make their home in the lush forests of La Romera. In the nearby hills, we’ll look for the recently rediscovered Antioquia Brushfinch and Antioquia Wren—once thought extinct. Traveling south, we’ll visit Jardín, a charming mountain town and gateway to the Yellow-eared Parrot Reserve, where these critically endangered wax-palm specialists soar above emerald ridges.
At Río Blanco Reserve near Manizales, we’ll experience the thrill of antpitta feeding stations—where Chestnut-crowned, Brown-banded, and Bicolored antpittas hop into view. The surrounding forests brim with tanagers, flowerpiercers, and the powerful Black-billed Mountain-Toucan. In the high páramo of Nevado del Ruiz, we’ll seek the shimmering Buffy Helmetcrest, Great Sapphirewing, and Andean Condor among volcanic peaks and alpine wildflowers.
Continuing south to Tatamá National Park, we’ll explore the remote Montezuma Lodge, one of Colombia’s most legendary birding sites. Here, rare Chocó endemics like the Gold-ringed and Black-and-gold tanagers light up the misty canopy. Hummingbird feeders overflow with color, from Velvet-purple Coronet to Empress Brilliant.
We’ll end in the verdant valleys near Cali, exploring Finca La Florida and the famous Anchicayá Road for final glimpses of Multicolored Tanager and Golden-headed Quetzal.
With expert leadership, comfortable lodges, and rich biodiversity at every turn, this tour celebrates the rebirth of Colombia as a world-class birding destination.
