Indonesia Highlights: Bali Extension
Tour Overview
This extension offers a rich, relaxed exploration of Bali’s diverse habitats, building on the 2026 itinerary while bringing forward natural history detail from last year’s combined Indonesia program. Bali is an island where spiritual traditions, volcanic landscapes, and wildlife coexist, and its eastern location within the Greater Sundas makes it an excellent destination for seeking specialty birds not found elsewhere on the main tour.
Beginning in Denpasar, we travel into Bali’s interior, ascending toward the cooler, forested slopes of Bedugul. The highlands are home to mountain specialists including Crescent-chested Babbler, Sunda Warbler, Javan Whistling-Thrush, Yellow-throated Hanging Parrot, and an array of flowerpeckers and bulbuls. Trails through the Bali Botanical Gardens offer broad forest vistas, shaded gullies, and excellent chances to observe feeding flocks moving between fruiting trees.
Continuing west, the journey leads to Bali Barat National Park, where the island’s most iconic bird—the critically endangered Bali Myna—resides. This habitat also supports Black-winged Myna, Green Junglefowl, Java Sparrow, Javan Plover, Beach Thick-knee, and various kingfishers. Dry monsoon forest and mangrove margins open beautiful opportunities for photography and close wildlife observation, echoing patterns from past seasons.
If target birds are achieved early, an optional ferry crossing to East Java expands the species list dramatically. Trails around Baluran and Gunung Ijen introduce a mix of new possibilities including babblers, broadbills, thrushes, and striking lowland forest birds that differ substantially from Bali’s avifauna.
Throughout the extension, the rhythm remains comfortable, with midday breaks and opportunities to enjoy Bali’s scenery, temples, art, and coastal atmosphere. This itinerary provides a harmonious blend of birding, landscapes, and culture, offering the perfect finale to the Indonesia Highlights tour.
Ecosystems Experienced
Bali blends a rich array of habitats within a compact island. Mountain forests around Bedugul hold cool, misty ridges with fig trees, moss-draped trunks, bamboo stands, and fern-filled gullies alive with babblers, warblers, thrushes, and leafbirds. Bali Barat’s dry monsoon forest supports mynas, junglefowl, pittas, and kingfishers along sandy paths and lowland woodland. Mangrove edges, coastal lagoons, and open beaches provide habitat for waders, plovers, herons, and the distinctive Javan Plover. The island’s blend of highland cloud forest, monsoon woodland, and coastal margins creates a vivid tapestry of habitats and species.
