Madagascar Highlights - October 2026

Madagascar stands alone—geologically, biologically, and spiritually—a place where time and evolution took their own course. Cut off from Africa since the age of the dinosaurs, this vast island developed an extraordinary degree of endemism. Six entire bird families occur nowhere else on Earth, along with over 100 species of lemurs, 150 chameleons, and countless unique orchids and trees.

Our journey unfolds across a series of Madagascar’s most iconic habitats. In the spiny forests of the southwest, we’ll walk among baobabs and thorny octopus trees in search of the near-mythical Subdesert Mesite and Long-tailed Ground-Roller. Along the coasts, we’ll visit pristine wetlands alive with flamingos, shorebirds, and the elegant Madagascar Plover. In the central highlands, we’ll explore rugged sandstone massifs and grasslands home to endemic parrots, couas, and vangas—birds that represent entire evolutionary lineages found nowhere else.

Farther east, in the rainforests of Mantadia and Andasibe, we’ll listen for the ethereal calls of the Indri, the largest living lemur. We’ll also seek radiant forest birds such as Pitta-like Ground-Roller, Velvet Asity, and Crossley’s Vanga. Nocturnal walks reveal another world of mouse lemurs, owls, leaf-tailed geckos, and dazzling chameleons.

Despite its challenges, Madagascar rewards every step with discovery. The island’s wildlife is remarkably approachable, its landscapes otherworldly, and its people warm and welcoming.
