South Africa: Wakkerstroom Extension
Tour Overview
Tucked into the Highveld of South Africa’s interior, the Wakkerstroom region offers an exceptional mix of grassland, wetland, and rocky slopes—habitats that sustain one of the country’s highest concentrations of endemic and threatened birds. This optional extension adds a final flourish to our South Africa journey, providing opportunities for species seen nowhere else.
Here, vast temperate grasslands sweep toward the horizon, dotted with farm ponds and reed-lined marshes known locally as vleis. Amid these landscapes, we’ll search for Southern Bald Ibis, Ground Woodpecker, and the elegant Blue and Denham’s bustards. The area’s small relict forests provide a different set of prizes, including Bush Blackcap, Barratt’s Warbler, and Olive Woodpecker. Larks, chats, and pipits are numerous and often vocal in spring; highlights include Rudd’s and Botha’s larks, Buff-streaked Chat, and Yellow-breasted Pipit.
Wetlands host African Black and White-backed ducks, African Spoonbill, flufftails, and snipe. Red-chested Flufftail and African Rail are shy but possible with patience. Mammal enthusiasts will delight in family groups of Meerkats foraging in open fields.
Beyond its birdlife, Wakkerstroom showcases the warm hospitality and fine infrastructure that make South Africa a premier natural history destination. Comfortable accommodations, pleasant spring temperatures, and easy birding across scenic terrain create an ideal environment for relaxation and discovery. For those seeking an encore to the Cape and Kruger adventure—or a glimpse of South Africa’s pastoral soul—this extension offers a perfect conclusion.
Ecosystems Experienced
Located on South Africa’s Highveld plateau, Wakkerstroom is a landscape of rolling temperate grasslands punctuated by seasonal wetlands, rocky ridges, and small forest remnants. This mosaic supports an outstanding diversity of endemics including Southern Bald Ibis, Blue Bustard, Rudd’s and Botha’s Larks, and Yellow-breasted Pipit. Wetlands attract spoonbills, ducks, and flufftails, while rocky slopes shelter Ground Woodpecker and Buff-streaked Chat. The combination of grassland, wetland, and woodland habitats creates one of southern Africa’s most productive birding regions.
