Southwest Pacific: Fiji & Samoa
Tour Overview
The islands of Samoa and Fiji offer one of the most beautiful combinations of tropical scenery, endemic birds, and relaxed travel in the entire Pacific. This thoughtfully paced tour provides a rich introduction to the region’s extraordinary natural diversity while allowing time to breathe in the spirit of these warm, welcoming cultures.
We begin in Samoa, where volcanic ridges rise steeply from a turquoise sea and lowland rainforest drapes the hillsides. Our days on Upolu reveal the island’s distinctive birdlife, including the elegant and rare Mao, Blue-crowned Lorikeet flashing through canopy openings, and forest species such as Samoan Whistler, Samoan Fantail, and Crimson-crowned Fruit-Dove. The pace is gentle, with time for coastal vistas, cultural visits, and optional snorkeling in clear lagoons.
Flying east into Fiji, we land first on Taveuni, the “Garden Island,” where cloud forest cloaks the mountains and waterfalls tumble through deep valleys. Here the Taveuni Silktail, Orange Dove, and tiny parrotfinches fill the understory and mid-canopy with bursts of color. Moving on to Viti Levu, we explore dense forests alive with shining-parrots, shrikebills, giant and wattled honeyeaters, and the radiant Azure-crested Flycatcher.
Our final island, Kadavu, provides the perfect finale: sheltered bays, breezy headlands, and a compact suite of endemics including Kadavu Fantail, Kadavu Honeyeater, and the brilliant Whistling Fruit-Dove. Snorkeling, beach time, and relaxed afternoons add to the experience, leaving plenty of space to take in the Pacific’s calm rhythm.
Throughout, travel is comfortable and efficient, with short flights, easy walking, and the welcome feel of island life. Each day offers new birds, new forests, and new coastal scenes, all threaded together by the tranquil pace of the South Pacific.
Ecosystems Experienced
This journey winds through volcanic islands draped in rainforests, mangrove-fringed bays, cloud forests woven with tree ferns, and quiet coastal headlands glowing with coral sand. Samoa’s Upolu is wrapped in lush broadleaf forest where waterfalls carve narrow valleys and ridgeline paths reveal sweeping ocean views.
In Fiji, Taveuni’s cloud forest hums with moisture, moss, and orchids, while Viti Levu’s interior rises in a layered world of tangled undergrowth, pandanus, and giant fig trees. Kadavu holds drier forest patches, coastal scrub, and turquoise lagoons, where reefs flicker with tropical fish and seabirds patrol the wind-carved cliffs.
