Jasper-East Texas Pre-trip
Tour Overview
Lying inland from the coastal prairies, the Piney Woods of East Texas form a lush green world of forests, rivers, and swamps rich with life. Known to Texans as “the Big Thicket,” this region’s mix of pine ridges and hardwood bottomlands supports a remarkable diversity of birds found nowhere else in the state.
Our base in the friendly town of Jasper offers easy access to three of East Texas’s finest birding sites: Angelina National Forest, Sandy Creek Park, and Big Thicket National Preserve. Each day, we’ll explore habitats alive with spring song—from the resonant notes of the Red-cockaded Woodpecker echoing through old-growth pine to the fluting calls of Prothonotary Warblers among cypress-lined sloughs.
In the pine uplands, we’ll search for Bachman’s Sparrow, Brown-headed Nuthatch, and Pine Warbler, while the nearby hardwoods may yield Swainson’s, Kentucky, and Hooded warblers, Acadian Flycatcher, and the elegant Swallow-tailed Kite. This extension offers the perfect combination of East Texas birding and relaxed travel—an ideal beginning to your 50th Anniversary Celebration experience.
