Barry Lyon’s lifelong passion for nature and birding began in his childhood in southern California, where time spent outdoors sparked a curiosity that grew into a career. As a teenager, he attended several VENT/ABA youth birding camps—formative experiences that set the stage for a decades-long relationship with Victor Emanuel Nature Tours.
Barry earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Arizona in Tucson, studying history and political science with a focus on environmental and development politics. He joined VENT as a tour leader in 1995, combining his love of travel and natural history with guiding experience across destinations worldwide. In 2004, he moved to Austin, Texas, to join the VENT office staff, rising to Chief Operating Officer in 2014 and Chief Executive Officer in 2023.
Though his current work centers on leadership, customer relations, and company management, Barry continues to guide a few tours each year and remains deeply connected to the field. His commitment to conservation extends beyond VENT—he is a former board member and past president of Travis Audubon Society, where he championed conservation and outdoor education for children. Barry lives in South Austin with his wife, Brooke Smith.
