India: Ganges River Cruise and Himalayas
Tour Overview
India’s immense cultural and biological diversity converge beautifully on this birds, nature, and culture tour, which traces a route from the fertile Ganges plains to the cool Himalayan foothills. A seven night cruise aboard the elegant Ganges Voyager provides a comfortable and intimate base from which to explore temples, palaces, monastery complexes, and thriving riverside communities. From the vessel’s decks and during excursions ashore, we gain insights into the daily rhythms of life along India’s sacred river, where history, spirituality, and nature are deeply intertwined.
Wildlife abounds throughout the journey. Along the Ganges, oxbow wetlands, riverine woodlands, and agricultural mosaics host wintering ducks, herons, ibis, kingfishers, bee eaters, and some of India’s most impressive raptors. With luck, we may spot Smooth coated Otters, Gangetic Dolphins, or even the elusive Bengal Tiger as we travel upriver. Quiet gardens and centuries old groves offer excellent opportunities for birding and photography, with colorful rollers, hornbills, and wintering passerines enlivening every day.
After disembarking, our journey shifts dramatically as we fly north into the Himalayas. In Darjeeling, we ride the historic Himalayan Railway and visit monastery libraries that preserve invaluable Tibetan Buddhist manuscripts. Higher still, in Singalila National Park near the Nepal border, oak and rhododendron forests support pheasants, trogons, laughingthrushes, parrotbills, and high altitude specialists found nowhere else in India’s lowlands. Crisp winter air, sweeping mountain vistas, and quiet forest trails create a striking counterpoint to the cultural richness of the Ganges plains.
With refined cuisine, exceptional lodging, and a relaxed pace, this multi themed journey offers a vivid blend of natural history, cultural immersion, scenic beauty, and superb photographic possibilities.
