Geoff Lockwood’s lifelong connection to birds began during his school years in South Africa and evolved into a career dedicated to art, education, and conservation. His passion for biodiversity across the Southern African sub-region continues to shape his work today.
After leaving school, Geoff began illustrating and writing about birds, publishing Garden Birds of Southern Africa in 1981. He later contributed half the illustrations for the 5th and 6th editions of Roberts’ Birds of Southern Africa, one of the region’s most respected ornithological references.
Based at the Delta Environmental Centre in Johannesburg, Geoff serves as part-time manager and education officer, inspiring environmental awareness among teachers and students. Over the past 40 years, he has been deeply involved in local birding organizations, including long-term service on the Council of the Southern African Ornithological Society (now BirdLife South Africa). He also plays an active role in training community bird guides, helping foster local stewardship of birdlife and habitats.
With an impressive 874 species recorded in southern Africa, Geoff ranks among the region’s top birders. He has led tours across Southern and Central Africa, as well as Kenya and Israel, sharing his deep knowledge and love of the natural world.
