About Rafael Galvez

Rafael Galvez has been birding and illustrating birds since childhood—a lifelong dual passion that began when his family moved from Peru to South Florida. With a sketchpad always close at hand, he has traveled across the U.S., Latin America, and Eurasia in search of birds, inspiration, and stories to share.

Rafael’s work bridges art, education, and conservation. He served as a board member of the BirdLife International affiliate in the Republic of Georgia, where he helped develop educational and conservation programs. During his time in the Caucasus, he coauthored and illustrated Raptors and Owls of Georgia (Caucasus) and produced documentaries and books on Georgian chant traditions and Russian realist art.

After returning to South Florida, Rafael directed the Florida Keys Hawkwatch migration monitoring project and continues to advance community engagement as chair of citizen science and IBA monitoring for the Tropical Audubon Society. His efforts focus on expanding access to birding and habitat appreciation among underserved communities.

Now based in Homestead, Florida, Rafael divides his time between the Everglades, illustration, and guiding. A passionate teacher and field leader for over 15 years, he shares his love of birds through art, outreach, and his blog, GalvezBirds.com.
