Belize: A Relaxed & Easy Tour
Tour Overview
This tour offers an inviting entry into the wonders of the Neotropics. We begin at Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, a 16,000-acre mosaic of lagoons, wetlands, and savannas alive with herons, kingfishers, and Jabirus. A boat ride through the lagoon may reveal the elegant Agami Heron, Bare-throated Tiger-Heron, and the tiny American Pygmy Kingfisher, while pine forest and cashew orchards nearby shelter Yucatan specialties including the striking Yucatan Jay, Yellow-lored Amazon, and Yucatan Woodpecker.
Later, we journey by river to Lamanai Outpost Lodge, set beside the tranquil New River Lagoon and the magnificent Maya ruins of Lamanai. Nearly 400 species have been recorded here, from trogons and toucans to motmots, puffbirds, and colorful tanagers. Each day offers a balance of gentle exploration and restful breaks, with time for afternoon siestas, riverside sunsets, and evening spotlight cruises to search for nightjars, potoos, and other nocturnal wildlife.
Comfortable lodges, outstanding birding, and a flexible pace make this a perfect tropical escape for both first-time and seasoned travelers.
Ecosystems Experienced
Belize’s northwestern lowlands blend freshwater lagoons, pine savannas, and tropical forests that stretch unbroken into Mexico and Guatemala. Crooked Tree’s shallow wetlands and open savanna attract herons, storks, and waterfowl, while Lamanai’s humid forests and shaded riverbanks teem with tropical life—from monkeys and motmots to butterflies and bromeliads. Together, these ecosystems showcase the transition between the Caribbean coastal plain and Central America’s inland jungles.
