Tour Overview

Borneo has long held a mythical allure for naturalists, and with good reason. Its vast dipterocarp forests rank among the oldest and most species-rich on the planet, surpassed only by parts of Amazonia. Here, towering emergent trees shelter a spectacular concentration of endemic birds and mammals, and the forest itself hums with life at every level—from canopy to forest floor.

Our journey begins beneath the granite summit of Mount Kinabalu, an island in the sky rising above Sabah’s coastal plain. These cool, moss-draped montane forests harbor a suite of highly localized endemics found nowhere else on Earth. Along epiphyte-laden trails we search for Whitehead’s Broadbill, Mountain Wren-Babbler, Golden-naped Barbet, and Crimson-headed Partridge, while laughingthrushes, yuhinas, and spiderhunters enliven the understory. Kinabalu offers a striking contrast to the lowlands and provides an essential introduction to Borneo’s elevational diversity.

Descending to Sepilok, we enter the world of lowland rainforest. Elevated walkways and quiet forest trails provide access to trogons, broadbills, pittas, barbets, woodpeckers, and the remarkable Bornean Bristlehead. Nearby, along the Kinabatangan River, we explore by boat through mangrove and freshwater swamp forests. Here Orangutans move through riverside trees, Proboscis Monkeys gather at dusk, and hornbills cross the sky in slow, powerful flight. With luck, we may encounter Bornean Pygmy Elephant or Storm’s Stork in this rich riverine mosaic.

The climax of the tour is Danum Valley, one of Southeast Asia’s finest remaining tracts of primary rainforest. Based at the superb Borneo Rainforest Lodge, we spend unhurried days exploring pristine forest where Great Argus call from shadowed slopes, pittas flash jewel-like colors along trails, and mammals reveal themselves in quiet moments. Evenings bring opportunities for spotlighting nocturnal life—flying squirrels, civets, and other elusive creatures.

Throughout, this is a premium program that combines immersive rainforest exploration with comfort and thoughtful pacing. Excellent lodges, fine cuisine, and expert local knowledge ensure that the focus remains where it belongs—on experiencing one of the most extraordinary natural regions on Earth.

Ecosystems Experienced

Sabah encompasses an exceptional range of tropical habitats. At higher elevations, Mount Kinabalu’s cool montane and cloud forests are draped in moss, orchids, and rhododendrons, supporting a concentration of endemics. Below, vast lowland dipterocarp forests harbor hornbills, pittas, trogons, and primates. Along the Kinabatangan River, mangrove and freshwater swamp forests form a rich riverine corridor teeming with birds and mammals. In Danum Valley, towering primary rainforest represents one of Southeast Asia’s most intact forest ecosystems, offering unparalleled biodiversity.

Expected Climate

Temperature
Lowland conditions are warm to hot and humid, typically in the upper 70s to low 90s °F (mid-20s to low 30s °C). Evenings are often more comfortable. In the mountains around Kinabalu, temperatures are noticeably cooler, especially in early mornings and at higher elevations.
Rainfall
Rain is possible at any time of year in Sabah’s equatorial climate. Showers are often localized and brief but can be heavy. The forest remains lush year-round, and rain rarely disrupts extended field time.
Seasons
Borneo’s climate is relatively aseasonal, with consistent warmth and humidity throughout the year. While some months may be slightly drier, conditions remain suitable for birding and wildlife viewing at all times. Wildlife activity is not strongly seasonal, and the forests maintain their vibrant productivity year-round.
