Brazil: Iguacu Falls Pre-Trip
Tour Overview
The mighty cataracts of Iguaçu—among the largest and most spectacular waterfalls on Earth—provide a dramatic setting for this focused Atlantic Forest extension. Based at an excellent hotel directly opposite the falls, we enjoy immediate access to forest trails and multiple overlooks, where mist rises through subtropical canopy and swifts wheel above the gorge.
Our time here is dedicated to the rich and highly endemic birdlife of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, a habitat markedly different from the Pantanal and offering minimal species overlap. Along forest roads and the renowned Poço Preto trail, we search for Black-fronted Piping-Guan, Spot-billed Toucanet, Plush-crested Jay, Surucua Trogon, Rufous-capped Motmot, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, and both Robust and Blond-crested woodpeckers. Mixed flocks may yield Blue-naped Chlorophonia, Black-goggled Tanager, White-throated Woodcreeper, and Three-striped Flycatcher, while careful attention could reward us with Atlantic Forest endemics such as Russet-winged Spadebill, São Paulo Tyrannulet, and Creamy-bellied Gnatcatcher.
With no long drives and easy terrain—much of our exploration along flat trails or via open trailer—this pre-trip offers relaxed yet productive birding in one of South America’s most beautiful settings. The combination of roaring waterfalls, lush forest, and brilliant birdlife makes Iguaçu a fitting and unforgettable prelude to our Brazilian adventure.
Ecosystems Experienced
Subtropical Atlantic Forest cloaks the Iguaçu region, where dense evergreen woodland, riverine corridors, and spray-nourished ravines surround the vast falls. Remnant primary forest and regenerating woodland host a wealth of endemics, while broad rivers and marshy edges add further habitat diversity within a compact and easily explored area.
