VENT’s inaugural journey around Corsica invites you to experience France’s “Isle of Beauty” from the deck of the elegant Le Ponant, a 3-masted sailing yacht carrying no more than 32 guests. Traveling under wind whenever possible, we move through the Mediterranean much as Corsica’s early navigators once did—close to the sea, attentive to light, weather, and wildlife, and always aware of the island rising rugged and luminous on the horizon.

Our voyage begins in Nice and traces Corsica’s storied coastline, calling at Bastia, Porto Vecchio, Bonifacio, Ajaccio, and Calvi. Each port reveals another chapter of this island crossroads—Bronze Age sites, medieval citadels, Genoese fortresses, quiet fishing towns, and landscapes forever linked to Napoleon. Daily shore excursions offer a choice: delve into Corsica’s layered cultural and historical legacy with expert local guides, or focus more closely on the island’s distinctive birds and natural history with VENT leaders.

Corsica’s ecological diversity is striking. Marshy lagoons and sheltered bays host Red-crested Pochard and Audouin’s Gull, while sea cliffs and offshore islets support Alpine and Pallid swifts and Eleonora’s Falcon. In the mountains, open pine forests hold one of Europe’s most sought-after endemics—the Corsican Nuthatch—found nowhere else on Earth. The fragrant maquis shelters Moltoni’s, Marmora’s, and Dartford warblers, along with the charismatic Woodchat Shrike, and we may also encounter Corsican Finch, Spotless Starling, and other Mediterranean specialties.

Life aboard Le Ponant is both comfortable and convivial. For those wishing to extend their exploration, an optional pre-trip to the Grand Canyons of Provence showcases some of southern France’s most dramatic landscapes, where Red-billed Chough, Blue Rock-Thrush, and Eurasian Griffon add avian flair to towering limestone gorges.

Corsica presents a striking mosaic of habitats within a remarkably compact island. Along the coast, aromatic maquis, rocky headlands, and sea-cliff ledges meet the open Mediterranean, while inland valleys rise through oak and chestnut woodlands into upland pine and fir forests. Leeward slopes give way to open grasslands and heath, and clear rivers cut dramatic canyon corridors through the mountains.

This ecological variety supports a compelling mix of Mediterranean specialties and island endemics. Forested highlands shelter the Corsican Nuthatch—found nowhere else on Earth—while raptors patrol sea cliffs and seabirds move just offshore. With its high level of plant endemism and comparatively light human footprint in many areas, Corsica offers an unusually intact and rewarding setting for natural-history exploration.
