Fall at Panama's Canopy Tower
Tour Overview
In the heart of the South Caucasus, Georgia is a land where ancient culture and wild nature meet. Between the Black and Caspian Seas, its landscapes shift from sun-baked semi-deserts to lush subtropical forests and snow-covered peaks. Here, every meal is a celebration, every song echoes centuries of history, and every horizon holds the promise of migration.
Autumn is harvest season, when vineyards brim with grapes bound for the earthen qvevri, and the skies above the Black Sea fill with more than a million migrating raptors. From coastal lookouts near Batumi, we’ll witness kettles of eagles, kites, and harriers swirling overhead while shorebirds like Sociable Lapwing and Black-winged Pratincole feed along the wetlands. Songbirds—from Thrush Nightingale to Blyth’s and Paddyfield Warblers—add melody to the spectacle.
Our journey then rises into the Caucasus, where medieval towers stand watch over mountain hamlets and the haunting harmonies of Svaneti’s ancient chants carry through deep gorges. Amid rugged alpine passes and glacial valleys, we’ll seek out iconic high-country species including Caucasian Grouse, Güldenstädt’s Redstart, and Lammergeier. To the south, semi-desert cliffs and cave monasteries shelter Western Rock Nuthatch, Imperial Eagle, and Egyptian Vulture.

Each morning begins with the calls of toucans, motmots, and manakins, and the chance to spot dazzling Blue Cotinga and Green Shrike-Vireo right from the observation deck.
Nearby lie some of the most famous birding sites in the Neotropics. On world-renowned Pipeline Road, we’ll explore primary and secondary forests alive with puffbirds, trogons, antbirds, and tanagers. The Panama Rainforest Discovery Center and its canopy tower provide an unparalleled perspective on forest life, while the foothills of Cerro Azul reveal an array of hummingbirds, toucanets, and colorful tanagers. Throughout, hawk migration adds another spectacle—thousands of Broad-winged and Swainson’s hawks and Turkey Vultures streaming southward across the sky.
From the lively wetlands of Gamboa to the drier forests of Metropolitan Natural Park, each day offers new species and unforgettable moments. With excellent accommodations, tropical wildlife encounters, and easy access to an astounding variety of habitats, this classic VENT tour offers the perfect introduction to Neotropical birding.
