Panama: El Valle's Canopy Lodge
Tour Overview
In the lush foothills of central Panama, El Valle de Antón rests within a vast volcanic caldera surrounded by misty ridges and forested peaks. It’s here that Raúl Arias de Para realized his dream of creating the Canopy Lodge, sister to the world-famous Canopy Tower. Combining luxury and intimacy, the lodge stands as a sanctuary for both wildlife and travelers.
Days unfold to the chorus of motmots, tanagers, and wrens. From the open-air dining terrace, guests watch feeders visited by Rufous Motmot, Crimson-backed and Flame-rumped Tanagers, Buff-throated Saltator, and Rufous-tailed Hummingbird. Nearby gardens sparkle with Violet-headed Hummingbird, Green Thorntail, and the tiny Rufous-crested Coquette. In surrounding forests, Tody Motmot, Dull-mantled Antbird, and the elusive Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo await the patient observer.
Excursions into surrounding habitats expand the experience. Cloud forest ridges at Altos del María reveal Snowcap, Orange-bellied Trogon, and Black-crowned Antpitta. Dry lowlands near the Pacific yield Veraguan Mango, Crested Bobwhite, and Savannah Hawk, while misty roads around La Mesa teem with hummingbirds and tanagers.
Beyond the birds, the Canopy Lodge offers tranquility—an immersion in the sensory richness of tropical nature balanced with the grace of thoughtful design. For birders and nature lovers alike, this is a journey of color, comfort, and discovery.
