Tour Overview

Jun 15–Jun 24, 2027

Berlin offers one of Europe's most rewarding combinations of birding, history, and culture. Nearly one-third of the city consists of forests, lakes, parks, wetlands, and protected natural areas, creating exceptional opportunities to observe breeding birds while remaining just minutes from some of the continent's most celebrated museums and historic landmarks.

Throughout the tour we balance mornings in productive birding habitats with afternoons exploring Germany's rich artistic and architectural heritage. Wetlands around Karow Ponds, Linum, Strengsee, and the Unteres Odertal provide opportunities to observe waterbirds, marsh specialists, raptors, and colorful passerines, while the open farmland of Havelland offers one of Europe's best chances to encounter the magnificent Great Bustard. Along the way we search for Red Kite, White-tailed Eagle, Golden Oriole, Penduline Tit, Black Woodpecker, Eurasian Hoopoe, Red-backed Shrike, and many other specialties of northeastern Germany.

Equally memorable are visits to Berlin's world-famous cultural treasures. Wander Museum Island, explore the elegant grounds of Charlottenburg Palace, admire masterpieces at the Kulturforum, ascend the iconic Reichstag dome, and discover beautifully preserved medieval monasteries that reflect centuries of German history. The tour is enriched by expert interpretation that seamlessly connects natural history with art, architecture, and European culture.

Comfort is central to the experience. Remaining at a single hotel throughout the journey minimizes packing and allows relaxed evenings in one of Europe's most vibrant cities. Most excursions involve easy walking on level trails, park paths, or museum grounds, with comfortable transportation to more distant birding locations. Whether your interests lean toward birds, history, photography, or fine art, this thoughtfully designed itinerary showcases the remarkable diversity of Berlin and Brandenburg in late spring.

Ecosystems Experienced

Berlin and Brandenburg encompass an impressive variety of central European habitats within a remarkably compact region. Urban parks, mature deciduous forests, lakes, fishponds, reedbeds, floodplain wetlands, heathlands, agricultural fields, and lowland rivers support an exceptional diversity of breeding birds. The expansive wetlands of the Oder River floodplain, the open grasslands of Havelland, and the marshes around Linum and Strengsee create ideal conditions for cranes, bustards, raptors, waterfowl, and marsh birds, while Berlin's extensive parks and woodlands provide habitat for woodpeckers, orioles, shrikes, and numerous woodland songbirds.

Expected Climate

Temperature
Daytime highs typically range from 68–75°F (20–24°C), while mornings and evenings are pleasantly cool, often falling to 50–55°F (10–13°C).
