France: Birds & Art in Provence
Tour Overview
In the soft light of Provence, every day unfolds as a celebration of beauty, history, and life. Centered entirely in Arles, this relaxed journey offers an unparalleled blend of natural and cultural experiences. From the Roman amphitheater and medieval cloisters to the vast wetlands of the Camargue, the landscapes here have inspired artists, poets, and birders for generations.
Our days will alternate between birding excursions across southern France’s most iconic natural areas and cultural visits to the region’s timeless treasures. The Camargue teems with Greater Flamingos, herons, avocets, and the sleek Slender-billed Gull. The stony plains of La Crau echo with the songs of larks and Corn Buntings, while the Vigueirat Marshes offer views of Squacco and Purple Herons, Whiskered Terns, and reed-dwelling warblers. Among olive groves and limestone hills, we’ll watch for European Bee-eater, Hoopoe, and Blue Rock Thrush.
Each afternoon invites a more leisurely rhythm—perhaps a visit to Les Baux, the haunting ruins of a medieval fortress perched high above the Valley of Hell; or to Saint-Paul de Mausole, where Van Gogh painted among the olive trees. Evenings are for lingering dinners, fine Provençal wine, and twilight strolls through Arles, where swifts circle above ancient stone walls.
This tour is perfect for birders, nature lovers, and travelers who appreciate the art of slow discovery—immersed in the color, flavor, and light of the French Mediterranean.
