Southern Spain in Winter
Tour Overview
This tour offers a perfect balance of birding, history, and Mediterranean charm. Our journey begins in Seville, where the Alcázar and Gothic Cathedral reflect centuries of Moorish and Christian influence. The lively energy of Andalusian culture—its cuisine, architecture, and music—sets the tone for our exploration of Spain’s southern landscapes.
We’ll travel through the Sierra de Aracena and the dehesa, a timeless mix of oak forest and pastureland supporting soaring Cinereous and Spanish Eagles. The steppe grasslands of Extremadura host Great and Little Bustards, cranes, and kites, while Doñana National Park, one of Europe’s greatest wetlands, abounds with flamingos, ducks, storks, and rare waterfowl. Here, we’ll also search for one of the continent’s most elusive mammals—the Iberian Lynx.
The adventure continues to Cádiz, Tarifa, and Gibraltar, where coastal cliffs and beaches host wintering seabirds, sandgrouse, and the reintroduced Northern Bald Ibis. Our final days bring stunning views over the Strait of Gibraltar and the chance to explore its fabled caves and resident Barbary Macaques.
Combining elegant accommodations, exceptional birding, and Andalusia’s vivid spirit, this tour offers an unforgettable look at Europe’s southern soul.
Ecosystems Experienced
Andalusia’s landscapes reveal a tapestry of Mediterranean ecosystems—from cork oak forests and rocky sierras to vast wetlands, farmlands, and coastal cliffs. The dehesa supports grazing livestock, acorn-fed pigs, and rich raptor populations. Doñana National Park preserves a mosaic of marshes, dunes, and forests teeming with herons, eagles, and flamingos. To the south, salt flats, beaches, and the Strait of Gibraltar form a crossroads for migratory birds linking Europe and Africa.
