Grand North Dakota
Tour Overview
North Dakota stretches across a tremendous sweep of the Northern Great Plains, where sky, grass, and water shape one of the most bird-rich regions in North America. This extensive itinerary showcases the state’s full ecological breadth, exploring riparian woodlands, tallgrass prairie, glacial pothole wetlands, unglaciated badlands, and northern aspen-oak forests. Each landscape holds a different cast of species, creating an unforgettable blend of eastern, western, northern, and prairie specialists.
Your adventure begins in Fargo along the Red River of the North. Here, deciduous forests shelter Pileated Woodpecker, Great Crested Flycatcher, Scarlet Tanager, and American Redstart at the western edge of their ranges. A day in the Sheyenne National Grasslands introduces classic prairie birds including Bobolink, Clay-colored Sparrow, Dickcissel, Grasshopper Sparrow, and a mix of woodland species in scattered oak groves.
Continuing west, you enter the famed prairie pothole region of Kidder County, often called the waterfowl factory of North America. Hundreds of wetlands support a spectacular array of ducks, grebes, rails, gulls, terns, shorebirds, and grassland raptors. Chestnut-collared Longspur, Baird’s Sparrow, LeConte’s Sparrow, Nelson’s Sparrow, and Sprague’s Pipit highlight these wide-open spaces.
In the west, the Little Missouri River carves the rugged badlands surrounding Theodore Roosevelt National Park. These mesas and buttes hold Rock Wren, Black-billed Magpie, Lazuli Bunting, and Black-headed Grosbeak. Bison, Pronghorn, Elk, and Prairie Dogs enrich the scenery, while evening excursions may reveal Common Poorwill beneath star-filled skies.
The journey finishes in the Minot region and the Turtle Mountains near the Canadian border. Aspen groves, glacial lakes, and rolling hills support Common Loon, Red-necked Grebe, Broad-winged Hawk, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and ten species of breeding warblers. A final day along the Missouri River brings Piping Plover, Least Tern, and stories from Lewis and Clark country.
