Guyana: The Rupununi
Tour Overview
Guyana remains one of the last truly wild places on Earth—a land of rainforest, savanna, and river that feels far removed from the modern world. On this special Victor Emanuel Nature Tours expedition, we travel in support of the Red Siskin Initiative, a groundbreaking conservation effort to restore one of the most endangered birds in the Americas.
Our route explores the rich variety of southern Guyana’s landscapes, from the tropical rainforests of Iwokrama to the open savannas of the Rupununi. We’ll seek the striking Red Siskin in its last known stronghold, along with the equally stunning Sun Parakeet, and an impressive cast of Neotropical birds including Capuchinbird, Guianan Cock-of-the-rock, Gray-winged Trumpeter, and many colorful parrots and cotingas.
In addition to its spectacular birds, Guyana’s wildlife is unforgettable. The region’s vast savannas support Giant Anteater, Jabiru, and Collared Peccary, while the dense rainforest shelters tapirs, monkeys, and countless butterfly and orchid species. Each day brings new discoveries, guided by expert leaders from VENT, the Smithsonian, and the South Rupununi Conservation Society.
Accommodations range from comfortable to rustic, offering an authentic wilderness experience complemented by genuine local hospitality. While travel days can be long and adventurous, the rewards are exceptional: brilliant birds, immense landscapes, and a rare glimpse into one of South America’s least explored countries. With its combination of conservation purpose, natural beauty, and cultural connection, this journey captures the spirit of exploration that defines the VENT experience.
