Tour Overview

The Pantanal is among the richest wildlife regions on earth, a vast seasonal floodplain where birds and mammals concentrate in staggering numbers. This tour offers a deep, well-paced exploration of its varied habitats, using this year’s itinerary as the foundation and enriched with extensive, field-tested detail from last year’s definitive PDF. The journey begins in Cuiabá before transitioning into dry forest, pastureland, and wetlands around Pousada Piuval, a landscape alive with Hyacinth Macaws, Giant Anteaters, curassows, woodpeckers, and marsh species.

Traveling down the iconic Transpantaneira, we stop frequently for raptors, caimans, Jabirus, Plumbeous Ibis, and a parade of herons and kingfishers. At SouthWild Pantanal along the rio Pixaím, feeder activity, fruiting trees, and the adjoining gallery forest produce constant excitement—Blue-crowned Trogon, Purplish Jay, Pale-crested Woodpecker, Chotoy Spinetail, Band-tailed Antbird, Great Rufous Woodcreeper, and mixed flocks of seedeaters and tanagers. Afternoon river trips provide close views of Sunbittern, Agami Heron, Boat-billed Heron, Nacunda Nighthawk at dusk, and cracids returning to roost.

Continuing south, we enter the heart of “Jaguar Land,” where riverbanks, sandbars, and shaded channels offer the world’s most reliable sightings of Jaguars. Our extended stay at the SouthWild Jaguar Suites places us directly within overlapping home ranges of these magnificent cats, ensuring exceptional opportunities for photography and observation. Giant Otters, Bare-faced Curassows, terns, skimmers, kingfishers, and innumerable wading birds accompany us on daily boat excursions.

Returning north, we revisit gallery forest known for potoos, macaws, woodcreepers, parrots, and forest-dwelling flycatchers. Final birding near Cuiabá provides a fitting close to a journey rich in wildlife spectacles, comfortable lodges, superb food, and the thrill of world-class Pantanal natural history.

Ecosystems Experienced

The Pantanal is a seasonally flooded basin of enormous scale, shaped by river networks, marshes, gallery forests, and sprawling savannas. In the dry season, shrinking pools concentrate Jabirus, herons, ibises, kingfishers, Snail Kites, caimans, and capybaras in astonishing densities. Termite mounds rise from grasslands dotted with palms, while riverbanks host Sunbitterns, potoos, Sungrebes, and curassows beneath towering fig and ipê trees. Gallery forest provides shade, fruiting canopies, bamboo thickets, and vine-laden woods where antbirds, woodcreepers, trogons, manakins, primates, and tapirs thrive. Sandbars host skimmers and terns; side channels hold Giant Otters; and deeper marshlands shelter screamers, seriemas, and waterfowl. It is one of the most wildlife-rich mosaics on the planet.

Expected Climate

Temperature
August’s dry season brings warm to hot days across the Pantanal, generally ranging from the mid-70s to mid-90s F. Early mornings along rivers feel pleasantly cool, often in the 60s, perfect for watching macaws and herons stir at first light. Shade within gallery forests tempers midday heat, while breezes along the rios Cuiabá, Pixaím, and Piquirí provide natural cooling on boat excursions. Evenings cool comfortably, especially near water. Layering allows easy transitions between boat rides, open savanna, and shaded forest trails.
Rainfall
This period corresponds with the Pantanal’s dry season. Rain is infrequent, but passing clouds or brief sprinkles may occur. Low water levels concentrate wildlife, making this one of the best times for Jaguars and large flocks of waders. Dust increases along the Transpantaneira, but river habitats remain lush with green gallery vegetation. Skies are often clear with dramatic sunsets, ideal for evening birding and photography.
Seasons
Late winter in the southern hemisphere is prime time for wildlife viewing. Migratory pressures ease, water recedes to exposed channels, and herons, screamers, and ibises gather in impressive numbers. Jaguars run predictable river circuits, Giant Otters raise young in family groups, and macaws visit feeding trees daily. Marshes shimmer with terns, skimmers, jacanas, and wading birds, while forest species remain active during cool mornings. This is the season when the Pantanal reveals its full richness.
