Tour Overview

Romania remains one of Eastern Europe’s most surprising destinations—an ever-changing mosaic of forested mountains, medieval villages, rich wetlands, seaside grasslands, and the iconic waterways of the Danube River Delta. This mid-spring journey is perfectly timed to capture the full breadth of Romania’s natural spectacle, when breeding residents are joined by a powerful northbound migration of raptors, shorebirds, waterfowl, and songbirds.

Our adventure begins in Bucharest before we travel through the dramatic Carpathian Mountains, where conifer-clad slopes, beech forests, clear streams, and alpine meadows host a wide range of birdlife. Highlights include Black, White-backed, and Three-toed woodpeckers; Crested Tit; Wallcreeper; Ural Owl; Hazel Grouse; Nutcracker; Firecrest; Red-breasted Flycatcher; and opportunities to observe Brown Bears from a secure hide. This region also offers some of Europe’s most charming cultural landscapes, with Saxon fortified villages, medieval towns, and castles perched among dramatic peaks.

From here we descend toward the Black Sea coast, where extensive wetlands such as Histria and Vadu teem with herons, pelicans, Pygmy Cormorant, Spoonbill, Glossy Ibis, Paddyfield Warbler, Collared Pratincole, and a dazzling variety of migrating shorebirds and raptors. Inland gorges and steppe landscapes offer Roller, Bee-eater, Isabelline Wheatear, Levant Sparrowhawk, and Long-legged Buzzard.

The final chapter of the journey is the legendary Danube River Delta, explored for three nights aboard a comfortable floating hotel. A labyrinth of lakes, marshes, channels, and alluvial forests hosts an astonishing concentration of wildlife. Expect close views of Dalmatian and Great White pelicans, Purple Heron, White-tailed Eagle, Red-necked and Eared grebes, Ferruginous Duck, Thrush Nightingale, Kingfisher, Rollers, and Bee-eaters—often from your seat on deck.

With expert local and VENT leaders, warm Romanian hospitality, and centuries of history woven throughout, this is one of Europe’s most memorable spring expeditions.

Ecosystems Experienced

A remarkably diverse blend of Carpathian conifer forests, beech woodlands, alpine meadows, limestone gorges, steppe grasslands, large inland lakes, and the expansive marshes, channels, and alluvial forests of the Danube River Delta. These varied habitats support an exceptional mix of European breeding species and long-distance migrants.

Expected Climate

Temperature
Late spring in Romania brings generally mild, comfortable conditions across the country, though temperatures vary with elevation and proximity to the coast. In Bucharest and the lowlands, daytime highs typically reach the upper 60s to mid-70s°F, with cooler mornings and evenings. The Carpathian Mountains are noticeably cooler, especially in shaded valleys and higher passes where temperatures can dip into the 40s–50s°F. Along the Black Sea coast and throughout the Danube Delta, the climate is pleasant and springlike, with mild afternoons, gentle breezes, and comfortably cool nights.
Rainfall
May is a transitional month with mostly mild, pleasant days punctuated by occasional showers or overcast periods. The Carpathians can receive brief mountain showers, while coastal and delta regions are typically drier but still prone to spring rainfall.
Seasons
This tour takes place during late spring, a peak period for northbound migration, breeding activity, wildflowers, and mild weather. Forests are full of song and fresh foliage, wetlands are rich with waterbirds, and the Danube Delta is at its most active and bird-filled.
