Southern Peru: Feathers & Traditions
Tour Overview
Join us for a journey through southern Peru where exceptional birding and cultural discovery unfold side by side. From Cuzco—the historic heart of the Inca world—to the grandeur of Machu Picchu, and from the fertile Sacred Valley to the dramatic depths of Apurímac Canyon, this program moves through some of the most storied landscapes in the Andes.
Working outward from Cuzco, we explore a remarkable range of habitats—high passes, river valleys, cloud forest edges, and Andean lakes—each offering its own distinct birdlife. Peru ranks among the most diverse birding destinations on earth, and this itinerary highlights both its richness and its regional specialties. Hummingbirds are a constant presence, including Giant and Sword-billed, alongside endemics such as Bearded Mountaineer, White-tufted Sunbeam, Inca Wren, Rusty-fronted Canastero, and Apurímac Brush-Finch.
Beyond the birds, this is a deeply immersive experience of place. We visit significant Inca sites beyond Machu Picchu, walk through local markets, and spend time in communities where traditions remain an active part of daily life. These cultural moments are not separate from the journey—they are integral to understanding the landscapes we move through.
Peru’s cuisine adds another layer to the experience, shaped by a blend of indigenous and global influences. Throughout the tour, we enjoy thoughtfully prepared regional dishes that reflect the country’s culinary depth. Accommodations are comfortable and well-situated, often surrounded by gardens and natural settings that bring birdlife right to our doorstep.
Ecosystems Experienced
Southern Peru brings together river-fed wetlands, the fertile terraces of the Sacred Valley, windswept páramo at 14,000 feet, lush cloud forests around Machu Picchu, and deep Andean canyons carved over millennia. Hummingbird gardens glow with flowering shrubs; mossy ridges shimmer with orchids and bromeliads; and high lakes reflect the jagged silhouettes of the surrounding peaks. It’s a region where dramatic geological forces, ancient agriculture, and rich biodiversity meet in a single, breathtaking tapestry.
