Tour Overview

Ecosystems Experienced

From the temperate rainforests of central Chile to the wind-shaped steppes of southern Patagonia, this journey spans some of the most striking habitats in the Southern Hemisphere. Lush Andean forests drip with mosses, ferns, and epiphytes and shelter woodpeckers, tapaculos, and forest furnariids. As elevations rise, the vegetation gives way to alpine tundra, glacial valleys, and ridgelines patrolled by condors and buzzard-eagles. Fjords, sea cliffs, and nearshore islands introduce rich marine ecosystems alive with penguins, cormorants, albatrosses, and sea lions. To the south, sprawling peat bogs, lenga and ñire woodlands, and the wide Patagonian steppe create a patchwork of rugged, windswept landscapes that define the region’s wild, untamed nature and extraordinary biodiversity.

Expected Climate

Temperature
Spring conditions create a notable north–south gradient: central Chile typically enjoys mild days of 65–75 °F (18–24 °C) with cooler mornings and evenings, while southern Patagonia brings brisker weather, with daytime highs around 50–60 °F (10–16 °C) and nights that can fall to 30–40 °F (-1–4 °C). Higher elevations and open steppe amplify both chill and wind.
Rainfall
Spring weather varies across the region. Central Chile often experiences stable, clear mornings with only occasional light showers, while Patagonia remains more dynamic: rain, snow flurries, fast-moving squalls, and strong winds are all possible, shifting rapidly as systems move through the southern Andes and across the steppe.
Seasons
The austral spring is unfolding, bringing longer days, greening vegetation, blooming wildflowers, and heightened wildlife activity. Birds display fresh breeding plumage, forest species vocalize more readily, and mammals across Patagonia become increasingly visible as the landscape awakens from winter.
