Tour Overview

The “Wild Patagonia & Southern Chile” tour showcases the full sweep of southern Chile, from emerald Andean forests to stark Patagonian steppe and glacier carved fjords. This is a land of big scenery and equally big wildlife experiences, where towering peaks, teal lakes, and roaring winds frame encounters with some of South America’s most iconic birds and mammals.

You begin near Santiago, exploring the Andes foothills where Magellanic Woodpecker, Chilean Flicker, Rufous tailed Hawk, and ground loving tapaculos haunt forested slopes and ravines. Traveling south to the Lake District, you enter the realm of Valdivian temperate rainforest, where Alerce Andino National Park and nearby coastal roads reveal moss draped trees, ferns, and a rich mix of endemic and range restricted birds. A visit to offshore islets and Chiloé Island brings you close to spirited colonies of Humboldt and Magellanic Penguins, plus chances for Black browed Albatross, Red legged Cormorant, and Southern Giant Petrel.

Farther south, the tour shifts to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. Around Punta Arenas and the Strait of Magellan, windswept shores and broad wetlands hold Magellanic Plover, steamer ducks, and flocks of geese. Boat trips to Magdalena Island and Tierra del Fuego bring you into the world of Magellanic and King Penguins, Dolphin Gulls, and Imperial Cormorants, while wide open steppe supports Lesser Rhea, Guanaco, and Andean Condors circling on the wind.

The journey culminates in Torres del Paine National Park, where sculpted granite towers rise above turquoise lakes and flower filled hillsides. Here, Pumas are often seen at remarkably close range, moving confidently through a protected landscape. With spring light, blooming wildflowers, and long days in the field, this Chile and Patagonia tour offers a deeply rewarding blend of birds, mammals, and unforgettable scenery.

Ecosystems Experienced

The “Wild Patagonia & Southern Chile” route traverses temperate rainforests of the southern Andes, rich with moss covered Nothofagus trees, ferns, and epiphytes, then rises into alpine tundra, glacial valleys, and high Andean passes where Torrent Ducks, Black chested Buzzard Eagles, and Andean Condors patrol. Coastal zones, sea cliffs, and islands add cold ocean ecosystems alive with cormorants, penguins, albatrosses, and sea lions. Rugged peat bogs, lenga and ñire woodlands, and open Patagonian steppe complete a mosaic of habitats that reflect this remote region’s wild character and exceptional biodiversity.

Expected Climate

Temperature
From late November through mid December in southern Chilean Patagonia, daytime highs generally range from the upper 40s to low 60s °F, with cooler conditions near the sea and at higher elevations. Nights often drop into the 30s °F, especially in open steppe and near the mountains. Layered clothing, including a warm jacket, hat, and gloves, keeps you comfortable as you move between sheltered forest, breezy coasts, and exposed high country.
Rainfall
This period brings moderate precipitation and frequent wind driven showers or mist, particularly in coastal and forested zones where moist air meets the Andes. Skies can shift quickly from bright sun to passing squalls, then back to clear again. As spring advances, conditions gradually improve, yet Patagonia remains a region of changeable weather, where waterproof outer layers and wind protection are essential for comfortable days in the field.
Seasons
The tour is timed for the austral spring moving into early summer in far southern Chile. Daylight hours are long, snow is retreating from many slopes, and ecosystems are waking up after winter. Wildflowers bloom across steppe and hillsides, many birds are in fresh breeding plumage and song, and mammals such as Guanaco and Puma are active across open landscapes. Weather remains variable and often windy, which adds to the sense of wildness that defines Patagonia.
