Tour Overview

The California Central Coast in late September is a dynamic meeting place of ocean, shoreline, and inland valley ecosystems—each brimming with birdlife. This thoughtfully paced tour showcases the region’s finest natural spectacles, from legendary seabirding in Monterey Bay to inland oak savannas alive with California endemics. With mild weather and migration in full swing, it is an ideal season to explore one of North America’s most celebrated birding regions.

Two outstanding pelagic trips form the centerpiece of the experience. Departing from Monterey and Half Moon Bay, we enter some of the Pacific’s most productive upwelling zones. Here we search for Buller’s, Pink-footed, and Sooty shearwaters, three species of storm-petrels, and both Cassin’s and Rhinoceros auklets. Black-footed Albatross is often a highlight, gliding effortlessly across the swells. Marine mammals are equally thrilling—Humpback Whales, Risso’s and Pacific White-sided dolphins, and California Sea Lions are all possible, while Sea Otters float among the kelp forests near shore.

Closer to land, the birding remains exceptional. Rocky coastlines around Point Piños offer chances for Black Oystercatcher, Wandering Tattler, Surfbird, and Black Turnstone. Coastal groves host migrating warblers—Townsend’s, Hermit, and Black-throated Gray among them—and fall always holds the promise of a rarity. Wetlands and beaches from Monterey to Moss Landing support Marbled Godwit, Long-billed Curlew, Western Sandpiper, and an assortment of gulls and terns.

One day takes us inland to rolling golden valleys dotted with oaks, where we seek the charismatic Yellow-billed Magpie and Lawrence’s Goldfinch alongside California Quail, Oak Titmouse, Nuttall’s Woodpecker, and California Thrasher. Farther south along Big Sur, towering redwoods frame our search for the magnificent California Condor—a signature experience of the region.

With excellent food, scenic landscapes, and diverse habitats, this tour offers a rich exploration of coastal California’s avian treasures.

Ecosystems Experienced

The Central California Coast blends several highly productive ecosystems: deep offshore upwelling zones that fuel vast seabird and marine mammal concentrations; rugged sea cliffs and kelp forests supporting cormorants, sea lions, and rocky-shore specialists; tidal marshes, estuaries, and mudflats that attract shorebirds, waterfowl, and gulls; and inland chaparral, oak savannas, and riparian corridors hosting a suite of California endemics. The juxtaposition of marine and terrestrial habitats creates a concentrated region of exceptional biodiversity and peak fall migration activity.

Expected Climate

Temperature
Mid-September brings mild coastal days, typically 65–75 °F (18–24 °C), with cooler evenings dropping into the 50s °F (10–15 °C). Sea breezes and cool mornings are common, especially near the water.
Rainfall
Sustained rain is uncommon during this period. Expect mostly clear or partly cloudy skies, with occasional light marine fog or coastal drizzle that usually clears by late morning.
Seasons
Late summer transitions gently into early autumn along the Central Coast. Daylight remains long, winds begin to shift with offshore flow, and fall migration is well underway—from shearwaters and jaegers offshore to warblers, sparrows, and shorebirds along the coast and valleys.
