The magical Hindu island of Bali, famous as a beach tourism hotspot, has a lot to offer the birder and naturalist. Situated at the eastern end of the Greater Sundas, Bali provides superb birding and wildlife viewing.

The island’s most iconic bird, the beautiful and very rare Bali Myna, will be at the top of the list during our Bali birding extension. Other special birds include the endangered Black-winged Myna, Beach Thick-knee, the dazzling Small Blue and Rufous-backed Dwarf kingfishers, Green Junglefowl, Javan Plover, Java Sparrow, and the spectacular Javan Banded-Pitta.

Our trip also ventures into the highlands where specialties include Crescent-chested Babbler, Javan Whistling-Thrush, Yellow-throated Hanging Parrot, the delightful Sunda Warbler, Blood-breasted Flowerpecker, and Gray-throated Ibon. Bali makes for a splendid five-day birding adventure, also offering sensational scenery and fascinating art and culture.

If we see all of our target birds in Bali, we catch the ferry across to East Java and explore national parks like Gunung Ijen and Baluran, which will offer quite a lot of new species for us.

Good to excellent accommodations; easy terrain trail and roadside birding; tasty fresh cooked food; some good wildlife photographic opportunities; down time in the middle of the day where possible; hot and humid in the lowlands to cool and pleasantly fresh in the mountains.

Price: $6,195 in 2025
