Tour Overview

Experience the height of Arctic spring as life bursts across Finland and Norway’s far north. Vast boreal forests, shimmering lakes, and rugged tundra create a wilderness unlike anywhere else in Europe—a land where Ural Owls, Great Gray Owls, and Northern Hawk Owls hunt in daylight, and the air rings with the calls of Common Crane, Ruff, and Bluethroat.

Our adventure begins in Oulu, surrounded by the rich wetlands of Liminganlahti, home to thousands of shorebirds and waterfowl. Continuing through Kuusamo’s pristine Taiga and rolling hills, we’ll search for iconic forest species—Black Woodpecker, Western Capercaillie, Hazel Grouse, and the elusive Red-flanked Bluetail.

Crossing the Arctic Circle, we’ll enter Lapland, where the forest thins to open tundra alive with breeding Eurasian Dotterel, Long-tailed Jaeger, and Snow Bunting. In Norway’s far northeast, the landscapes of the Varanger Peninsula offer another world entirely: a mix of rugged fjords, colorful tundra, and the roaring seabird cliffs of Hornøya Island, where thousands of Atlantic Puffins, Razorbills, and Common Murres crowd the ledges beneath circling White-tailed Eagles.

Returning south toward Helsinki, the forests and wetlands of southern Finland introduce a different suite of migrants—Thrush Nightingale, Red-backed Shrike, and Gray-headed Woodpecker among them—rounding out a journey that captures the full sweep of the Scandinavian spring.

With long daylight hours, superb photographic opportunities, and an unmatched diversity of northern wildlife, this tour offers a thrilling yet comfortable immersion into one of Europe’s last great wildernesses.

Ecosystems Experienced

The landscapes of Finland and Arctic Norway span the full spectrum of northern ecosystems—from boreal Taiga forests of spruce, pine, and birch, to vast peatlands and glacial lakes, to open tundra and fjord coastline where Arctic life flourishes under endless daylight. Here, the transition from dense forest to treeless high plateau mirrors the journey from temperate Europe to the Arctic frontier, each zone alive with breeding birds and wildflowers at their peak.

Expected Climate

Temperature
Spring in Scandinavia brings a remarkable range of conditions. Days are cool to mild, often reaching 45–65 °F (7–18 °C) in the south and 35–55 °F (2–13 °C) in the north. Nights are fresh, sometimes near freezing, though darkness never truly falls. Long hours of golden light create ideal birding and photography conditions, while a good jacket and layered clothing keep you comfortable through changing weather.
Rainfall
Weather is variable but rarely severe. Expect mostly clear, luminous days mixed with overcast skies and light rain, especially along the Norwegian coast. Occasional snow may linger at higher elevations, while soft Arctic light and mist create dramatic landscapes for viewing and photography.
Seasons
This tour captures the height of the Arctic spring, when snowmelt awakens the forests and tundra, and migration reaches its peak. Birds sing and display around the clock under the midnight sun, while wildflowers and long daylight hours transform the far north into a vivid, living tapestry of sound and color.
