Caucasus Georgia
Tour Overview
In the heart of the South Caucasus, Georgia is a land where ancient culture and wild nature meet. Between the Black and Caspian Seas, its landscapes shift from sun-baked semi-deserts to lush subtropical forests and snow-covered peaks. Here, every meal is a celebration, every song echoes centuries of history, and every horizon holds the promise of migration.
Autumn is harvest season, when vineyards brim with grapes bound for the earthen qvevri, and the skies above the Black Sea fill with more than a million migrating raptors. From coastal lookouts near Batumi, we’ll witness kettles of eagles, kites, and harriers swirling overhead while shorebirds like Sociable Lapwing and Black-winged Pratincole feed along the wetlands. Songbirds—from Thrush Nightingale to Blyth’s and Paddyfield Warblers—add melody to the spectacle.
Our journey then rises into the Caucasus, where medieval towers stand watch over mountain hamlets and the haunting harmonies of Svaneti’s ancient chants carry through deep gorges. Amid rugged alpine passes and glacial valleys, we’ll seek out iconic high-country species including Caucasian Grouse, Güldenstädt’s Redstart, and Lammergeier. To the south, semi-desert cliffs and cave monasteries shelter Western Rock Nuthatch, Imperial Eagle, and Egyptian Vulture.
Ecosystems Experienced
Georgia’s landscapes are as varied as its cultures. This small, mountainous nation of roughly 26,900 square miles (69,700 km²)—slightly larger than West Virginia—spans climates from humid subtropical coasts to arid interior valleys and alpine peaks. Along the Black Sea, mild, rainy conditions dominate, while the central and eastern plains are drier and more continental. In the Greater and Lesser Caucasus, weather can shift quickly from sunshine to wind or showers, with elevations reaching more than 7,000 feet (2,100 m).
In late September and October, coastal temperatures range from 55° F (15° C) to 75° F (24° C), often accompanied by heavy rain. Mountain areas average around 45° F (7° C) and can drop below freezing at night, while arid southern regions may reach 80° F (27° C) under bright sun. In Tbilisi, the capital, October days hover between 50° F (10° C) and 68° F (20° C). Given Georgia’s diversity of habitats and weather, layers and a ready day pack are essential companions for every outing.
