Grand Oregon
Tour Overview
Oregon is a state where rugged coastal cliffs, snow-capped mountains, and vast inland deserts come together to create one of the richest birding circuits in North America. This comprehensive tour highlights the breadth of the Beaver State’s ecosystems, offering participants a chance to explore nearly every major habitat—each filled with specialty species, migration activity, and unforgettable scenery.
We begin in Portland before moving quickly into the Cascade Mountains, where lush conifer forests support Varied Thrush, Townsend’s Solitaire, and Sooty Grouse. Panoramic views of the Columbia River Gorge and snow-draped Mount Hood set the stage for a journey that seamlessly blends landscapes with birdlife. As we continue eastward, the open pine forests near Sisters provide outstanding opportunities for woodpeckers—American Three-toed, Black-backed, and White-headed among them—with the added possibility of encountering Pinyon Jays moving through the region.
The wide-open basin of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge anchors the desert portion of the tour. One of the West’s most important stopover sites, Malheur’s marshes, lakes, and sagebrush plains attract migrating shorebirds, waterfowl, raptors, and songbirds. Black-necked Stilts, American Avocets, Long-billed Curlews, Prairie Falcons, and Golden Eagles are regular highlights. Moving west again, the Klamath Basin introduces oak woodlands and volcanic landscapes where Oak Titmouse, Lewis’s Woodpecker, and Dusky Flycatcher can be found. A visit to Crater Lake National Park offers sweeping views of the deep, sapphire-colored caldera and the chance to encounter high-elevation species like Clark’s Nutcracker.
We conclude along the Oregon Coast, where seabirds, marine mammals, and dynamic shorelines create a spectacular finale. Tufted Puffins, Common Murres, American Dippers, and a rich assemblage of gulls accompany the crashing waves. Throughout the journey, travelers enjoy excellent food, comfortable lodging, and some of the most varied natural history experiences the Pacific Northwest has to offer.
Ecosystems Experienced
The Grand Oregon circuit weaves through a remarkable range of interconnected ecosystems. Coastal spruce–hemlock forests blend into rocky headlands, sea cliffs, and estuaries rich with murres, cormorants, and migrating shorebirds. Inland, the Willamette Valley’s oak savanna, wetlands, and riparian corridors support waterfowl, raptors, and an array of songbirds. The Cascade Mountains introduce dense conifer forests, alpine meadows, lava fields, and cold streams where woodpeckers, crossbills, and high-elevation specialists thrive. East of the mountains, the landscape shifts to Great Basin sagebrush, juniper woodlands, and volcanic plateaus hosting sage thrashers, pronghorn, and desert raptors. This ecological diversity makes Oregon a premier venue for wide-ranging natural history and exceptional birding.
