This exceptional journey through western Panama’s Bocas del Toro Province combines relaxed luxury with exhilarating birding across a wide range of ecosystems—from tropical lowland forest and mangroves to montane cloud forest. With more than 400 possible species and a comfortable single base at Tranquilo Bay Eco Adventure Lodge, this is the Caribbean as few experience it: wild, colorful, and teeming with life.
Our adventure begins in Panama City, then continues by flight and boat to Isla Bastimentos, home to the award-winning Tranquilo Bay Eco Adventure Lodge. Set amid 110 acres of rainforest and mangroves adjacent to Bastimentos National Marine Park, the lodge offers an elegant retreat with world-class hospitality. From the six-story observation tower, we’ll watch Montezuma Oropendolas, parrots, and hummingbirds flit through the canopy, while capuchins and sloths move through the trees below.
Daily excursions bring extraordinary variety: the legendary Snyder Canal, where all six American kingfisher species may be seen; the lush highlands of Palo Seco Protection Forest; the island of Popa, home to the ethereal Snowy Cotinga; and the cool, misty forests of Fortuna, rising more than 4,000 feet above the Caribbean. Between outings, enjoy snorkeling, kayaking, or relaxing in your private cabana overlooking the sea.

Rainfall
October can be one of the drier months in some years, but expect intermittent rain showers. There will be plenty of sunny times for birding.
Seasons
This tour takes place during Panama’s wetter Caribbean season, although October is a drier month. Climate should be ideal for both birding and outdoor exploration.

Itinerary
Day 1
Travel and arrive at Tocumen International Airport and transfer to the Radisson Hotel Panama Canal, overlooking the Pacific entrance to the Canal.
Take an optional afternoon birding around the hotel grounds for Orange-chinned Parakeet, Social Flycatcher, and Saffron Finch.
Attend an evening welcome meeting and dinner with your leaders.
Day 2
Take a morning flight to Isla Colón, followed by a scenic boat transfer to Tranquilo Bay Eco Adventure Lodge on Isla Bastimentos.
Settle into your private cabana and explore the lodge trails and canopy tower for Montezuma Oropendola, Collared Aracari, and Prothonotary Warbler.
Enjoy evening birding from the veranda overlooking the Caribbean.
Day 3
Travel by boat to Punta Róbalo, then ascend through foothill forest into the Palo Seco Protection Forest, part of the La Amistad Biosphere Reserve.
Search for Keel-billed Toucan, Sulphur-winged Parakeet, Bay-headed Tanager, and Barred Hawk among towering trees and misty ridges.
Return by late afternoon, watching for Swallow-tailed Kite and migrating raptors en route and at the Tranquilo Bay Eco Adventure Lodge, Isla Bastimentos.
Day 4
Enjoy a boat excursion to Isla Popa, home to Snowy Cotinga, Slaty-tailed Trogon, and Yellow-throated Toucan.
Walk the island’s lush interior forest and mangroves before returning for lunch.

Day 5
Journey by boat through the historic Snyder Canal, searching for all six American kingfishers, Great Potoo, and the rare Nicaraguan Seed-Finch.
Continue to the San San-Pond Sak Wetlands for herons, ibis, and Collared Plover, then out to Swan Cay, where Red-billed Tropicbirds and Brown Boobies nest on seaside cliffs.
Return at sunset to the Tranquilo Bay Eco Adventure Lodge for cocktails and checklist review.
Day 6
Explore the Buena Esperanza Road in Tierra Obscura, a new and bird-rich corridor where Pied Puffbird, Black-crowned Tityra, and Purple-throated Fruitcrow are found.
Spend the afternoon at your leisure, such as swim, kayak, or bird along the forest trails and bathing pools near the lodge.
Day 7
Travel inland to the misty highlands of Fortuna Forest Reserve at 4,200 feet, one of Panama’s premier montane birding sites.
Search for Northern Emerald-Toucanet, Prong-billed Barbet, Azure-hooded Jay, and Blue-and-gold Tanager along the forest edge.
Enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking Lake Fortuna before returning to the coast.
Day 8
Spend a relaxed day enjoying the property’s trails, canopy tower, or coral reef snorkeling.
Attend an optional guided birding for favorites like Golden-collared Manakin, Tawny-capped Euphonia, and Buff-throated Saltator.
Day 9
Enjoy morning birding or leisure time before a midday flight back to Panama City.
Farewell dinner at the hotel and final species review before turning in for the night the Crowne Plaza Panama Airport, Panama City.
Day 10
Transfer to the Tocumen International Airport for morning or afternoon departures.
