Tour Overview

The Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas holds an irresistible mix of color, culture, and wildlife. Here, tropical and temperate worlds overlap, producing one of North America’s richest birding regions. From palm-shaded towns and historic ranchlands to sweeping coastal flats, the Valley brims with life. Every stop reveals something new: bold Green Jays flashing through the brush, Roseate Spoonbills feeding in tidal pools, or parrots wheeling above the rooftops of McAllen.

We begin our journey at the Casa de Palmas Hotel in McAllen, a beautifully restored Spanish Revival landmark set amid palms and courtyards. From this comfortable base, we’ll explore the region’s premier birding destinations—Quinta Mazatlán, Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, and Estero Llano Grande—each offering easy trails, close-range views, and the thrill of seeing birds found nowhere else in the United States.

Midway through the tour, we travel east to the coast and settle into the charming Lighthouse Boutique Hotel in Port Isabel. From here, we’ll visit the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center, Resaca de la Palma State Park, and Isla Blanca Park, and enjoy two boat cruises across the Laguna Madre to see dolphins, mangroves, and a wealth of waterbirds. Along the way, we’ll also explore the region’s history through visits to the Museum of South Texas History, Palo Alto Battlefield, and Port Isabel Historical Museum.

With luxury accommodations, fine dining, and mild winter weather, South Texas in Style combines premier birding, regional culture, and relaxation—an unforgettable winter escape.
