West Texas Spring Migration: Cibolo Creek Ranch and Davis Mountains
Tour Overview
Late April in West Texas brings an unforgettable blend of landscapes and birds. From rugged desert foothills and grasslands to forested “sky islands,” this region is a study in contrasts—and a birder’s paradise. Our journey begins in El Paso before traveling east to the cool slopes of the Davis Mountains and onward to the legendary Cibolo Creek Ranch, a 25,000-acre oasis rich in birdlife and history.
At Cibolo Creek, adobe-style luxury meets untamed desert beauty. Guests can bird just outside their rooms, where cottonwoods and desert scrub host Vermilion Flycatcher, Scaled Quail, Blue Grosbeak, and Varied Bunting. The surrounding canyons and arroyos offer Zone-tailed Hawk, Gray Vireo, Scott’s Oriole, and Canyon Wren. Late April is peak migration, bringing a constant movement of warblers, sparrows, and flycatchers through this desert oasis.
In the Davis Mountains, cooler pine-oak woodlands and grassy slopes reveal a different avifauna—Montezuma Quail, Plumbeous Vireo, Grace’s Warbler, and Hepatic Tanager among them. Wildlife abounds, with Pronghorn, Gray Fox, and the occasional Javelina rounding out the natural spectacle. With just two base lodgings, relaxed pacing, and stunning scenery throughout, this tour combines the essence of Texas hospitality with the magic of migration.
