West Texas: Cibolo Creek Ranch
Tour Overview
This exclusive West Texas program offers an unforgettable introduction to the birds and landscapes of the Chihuahuan Desert and its neighboring mountains. Centered at Cibolo Creek Ranch, one of Texas’s most historic and luxurious retreats, this short, relaxed journey showcases the wild character and exceptional birding of the state’s remote southwest corner.
Our time in the field will focus on three major habitats: the desert lowlands, rolling grasslands, and the “sky-island” woodlands of the Davis Mountains. Early October brings mild weather and peak bird activity, with a dynamic mix of resident species and southbound migrants. We’ll search for an exciting variety of birds that capture the region’s diversity, including Greater Roadrunner, Scaled and Montezuma quail, Vermilion Flycatcher, Acorn Woodpecker, Loggerhead Shrike, and Green-tailed Towhee. A full day in the Davis Mountains adds high-elevation species such as Western Bluebird, Hepatic Tanager, and Plumbeous Vireo.
Evenings invite relaxation and camaraderie, with opportunities for owling and stargazing under vast desert skies. The luxurious accommodations of Cibolo Creek Ranch—with its adobe architecture, antiques, and exceptional cuisine—create a welcoming home base for this special gathering.
While birding is our focus, this program also celebrates the broader natural and cultural heritage of West Texas. Participants will enjoy breathtaking views, fascinating geology, and excellent chances for mammals such as Pronghorn, Bobcat, and Collared Peccary. With minimal travel days, easy walking, and superb hospitality, this Chairman’s Council journey offers a seamless blend of discovery, relaxation, and the timeless beauty of the American Southwest.
