Spring in South Texas
Tour Overview
Few places rival South Texas in spring. Each April, the skies above the Gulf Coast fill with life as millions of birds pour north from the Tropics—an exhilarating display of migration and renewal. On this journey through the Texas Coast, King Ranch, Rio Grande Valley, and Hill Country, we’ll explore the full range of ecosystems that make this region one of the most bird-rich in North America.
We begin in Rockport, where a boat trip through the Intracoastal Waterway offers close views of the majestic Whooping Crane, Roseate Spoonbill, and Reddish Egret. Along the beaches of Mustang Island, expect Wilson’s Plover, Black Skimmer, and up to eight species of terns. Traveling south through the historic King Ranch, we’ll search for Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Tropical Parula, White-tailed Hawk, and Audubon’s Oriole among the mesquite savannas.
Farther south, the Lower Rio Grande Valley unveils a dazzling mix of tropical species—Green Jay, Altamira Oriole, Plain Chachalaca, and Ringed Kingfisher among them—with a chance for Mexican rarities that occasionally cross the border. The final chapter unfolds in the Texas Hill Country, where limestone canyons echo with the songs of Golden-cheeked Warbler and Black-capped Vireo. Evenings bring the thrill of watching millions of Mexican Free-tailed Bats erupt from their cave at sunset.
With fine accommodations, relaxed travel, and the magic of migration all around, this Texas adventure offers a perfect blend of birding, nature, and discovery.
