Totally Spain Solar Eclipse
Tour Overview
Northwestern Spain offers a captivating blend of natural wonders, historic cities, diverse birdlife, and dramatic landscapes shaped by mountains, rivers, and the Atlantic coast. This special tour adds another rare dimension: a total solar eclipse. Based in the cultural center of León, perfectly positioned along the path of totality, participants will witness this celestial event from a private winery reserved exclusively for VENT. With fine wine, astronomical expertise, and sweeping countryside as a backdrop, the experience promises to be unforgettable.
We begin in Madrid, exploring Casa de Campo for familiar European species before traveling north to León, a city steeped in Gothic heritage and Iberian history. Birding opportunities abound in the steppe habitats surrounding the city, where Iberian Green Woodpecker, Iberian Gray Shrike, Eurasian Hoopoe, and European Bee-eater brighten open country. Cultural outings include the magnificent León Cathedral, one of Spain’s great Gothic masterworks.
The eclipse event features expert commentary and telescope sessions guided by astronomer Rob Broeren, along with a celebratory dinner and wines from the host vineyard. After León, the journey continues to Asturias, where rugged mountains drop into lush coastal plains. Here, we explore the dramatic Picos de Europa, the wetlands of the Ría de Villaviciosa, and cliff-lined shores alive with seabirds and waders. Along the way, we search for Egyptian Vulture, Bearded Vulture, Common Kingfisher, Spotless Starling, and coastal specialties.
Throughout the tour, optional cultural excursions enrich the experience, including the Gothic cathedral of Oviedo and a pre-Romanesque royal palace. Good accommodations, excellent regional cuisine, varied habitats, and a balance of birding and free time create an ideal rhythm for exploring this beautiful region. Combined with the rare spectacle of totality, this tour offers memories to last a lifetime.
Ecosystems Experienced
Northwestern Spain offers striking ecological variety within a compact region. Around Madrid and León, dry steppe, scattered pines, and rolling cereal fields support hoopoes, shrikes, bustards, and larks. As the land rises toward Asturias, the terrain shifts into limestone mountains, deep gorges, and oak and beech forests where vultures, chamois, and mountain songbirds thrive. Along the coast, saltmarshes, tidal flats, and river estuaries shelter waders, herons, and coastal waterfowl beneath green, rugged hillsides. Together these landscapes form a mosaic of highland cliffs, open plains, and Atlantic wetlands, each offering its own suite of birds and natural treasures.
