Antarctica, South Georgia & the Falkland Islands
Tour Overview
Antarctica has long represented the ultimate destination for explorers, naturalists, and travelers drawn to the wildest corners of the planet. This remarkable expedition brings together the three great wildlife realms of the Southern Ocean: the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the Antarctic Peninsula. Each offers a distinct ecological character, and together they create the most complete and rewarding Antarctic experience possible.
We begin in Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world, before sailing eastward through the Beagle Channel and into the South Atlantic. Our first landfall in the Falkland Islands introduces us to windswept moorlands alive with Southern Rockhopper and Magellanic penguins, Black-browed Albatross colonies, and endemic species found nowhere else.
South Georgia rises dramatically from the sea like a glaciated fortress. Here we wander among vast colonies of King Penguins, watch Light-mantled and Snowy Albatrosses on nest, and observe Antarctic Fur Seals and Southern Elephant Seals along rugged beaches. The island’s whaling history and the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton add powerful human context to the overwhelming natural spectacle.
Continuing south, we cross the Antarctic Convergence into colder, nutrient-rich waters where seabirds gather in abundance. Along the Antarctic Peninsula we cruise narrow channels flanked by soaring peaks and immense glaciers, landing by Zodiac among colonies of Gentoo, Chinstrap, and Adelie penguins. Leopard, Weddell, and Crabeater seals rest on drifting ice floes while humpback and minke whales feed in protected bays. The scenery is sublime, the wildlife astonishingly approachable, and the experience unforgettable.
Throughout the voyage we travel aboard the expedition vessel Seaventure, enjoying outside-facing cabins, expert lectures, excellent cuisine, and comfortable Zodiac landings that bring us into intimate contact with this extraordinary environment. This is not simply a cruise—it is a true expedition to the southernmost reaches of the Earth.
Ecosystems Experienced
This voyage traverses three distinct Southern Ocean ecosystems. The Falkland Islands support windswept grasslands, rocky headlands, and coastal colonies of penguins and albatrosses, alongside endemic landbirds and nearshore marine mammals. South Georgia combines alpine peaks, glaciers, tussock-covered slopes, and vast beaches hosting immense concentrations of breeding seabirds and pinnipeds. The Antarctic Peninsula presents a dramatically different world of ice-clad mountains, tabular icebergs, pack ice, and protected fjords where krill-rich waters sustain penguins, seals, whales, and a remarkable diversity of pelagic birds. At sea, crossings of the Drake Passage and the Polar Front provide some of the finest seabirding on the planet.
