Japan: Summer Hokkaido
Tour Overview
Hokkaidō is Japan at its wildest — a northern world shaped by volcanoes, deep forests, sweeping wetlands, and a cultural history rooted in the traditions of the Ainu people. This leisurely-paced tour explores the island’s summer beauty, from high-mountain tundra to the Sea of Okhotsk. Throughout the journey, you enjoy superb birding, photogenic mammals, delicious cuisine, and meaningful cultural encounters.
The adventure begins in Kushiro, where the cool air of eastern Hokkaidō carries the calls of Red-crowned Cranes across lush wetlands. As the journey unfolds, you move through four national parks. In Daisetsuzan, alpine ridges and volcanic slopes hold Pine Grosbeak, Siberian Rubythroat, and Olive-backed Pipit. In Akan–Mashū, forests and lakes reveal Masked Bunting, Eastern Crowned Warbler, Brown-headed Thrush, and Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker. Along the Shiretoko Peninsula, you sail offshore in search of Orca, Minke Whale, and seabirds including Spectacled Guillemot, Short-tailed Shearwater, and Rhinoceros Auklet.
Cultural experiences enrich the itinerary. You meet Ainu artists, walk forest trails led by local cultural interpreters, enjoy a traditional dance performance, and visit museums preserving stories of the island’s ancient Jōmon and Ainu peoples. Traditional ryokans and scenic lodges offer natural hot springs, serene forest views, and meals that highlight Hokkaidō’s celebrated seafood, fresh vegetables, and mountain delicacies.
From the chorus of reed warblers at Kushiro to the haunting flight of White-tailed Eagles over Lake Furen, every day brings new sensory experiences, a thoughtful balance of nature and culture, and a rare chance to explore Japan’s northern frontier in the mild, beautiful days of summer.
