Tour Overview

The Scottish Highlands are a landscape of striking contrasts. Snow-dusted mountains rise above vast moors, ancient pine forests shelter rare woodland birds, and deep lochs cut through glacial valleys. This tour offers a week-long immersion in these wild places, paired with guided visits to some of Scotland’s most storied cultural and historical sites.

From our comfortable base at the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness, each day brings a new facet of Highland life. Birding highlights include specialties found almost nowhere else in Britain: Red Grouse on heather moors, Crested Tit and Scottish Crossbill in ancient Caledonian pines, Rock Ptarmigan and Snow Bunting in the high Cairngorms, and soaring Golden Eagles in the Findhorn Valley. Coastal outings reveal flocks of Common Eiders, Black-legged Kittiwakes, Razorbills, and the occasional Bottlenose Dolphin beneath towering cliffs.

Alongside rich birdlife, the region’s long and turbulent human history comes to life. You explore Cawdor Castle, a beautifully preserved fortress tied to Macbeth lore. At Culloden, a moving museum and battlefield walk recount the final, devastating clash of the Jacobite uprising. Fort George showcases military architecture and the story of the Highland regiments. And at Urquhart Castle, dramatic stone ruins overlook the mysterious waters of Loch Ness.

This tour is designed to be both enriching and accessible. Daily outings balance birding and cultural experiences with time to rest and enjoy the quiet charm of Inverness. Weather can vary quickly, but the spirit of the Highlands remains constant: warm hospitality, stirring scenery, and wildlife encounters that stay with you long after the journey ends.

Ecosystems Experienced

A diverse Highland mosaic including ancient Caledonian pine forest, heather moorland, peat bogs, freshwater lochs, glacial valleys, coastal cliffs, and North Sea inlets. These habitats support Red Grouse, Crested Tit, Scottish Crossbill, Ring Ouzel, Arctic and Red-throated Loons, Golden Eagle, and abundant seabirds along rugged coastlines.

Expected Climate

Temperature
Late spring temperatures typically reach the 50s and 60s F, with cooler mornings in the 40s. Weather shifts quickly in the Highlands, ranging from bright sun to light rain or passing showers. Warm layers and waterproof outerwear keep guests comfortable across elevations and conditions.
Rainfall
Light rain or mist is common and often brief. Overcast skies alternate with sunny periods, and occasional wind can make higher elevations feel cooler. Rain rarely disrupts plans, though flexibility enhances wildlife viewing and comfort.
Seasons
This late spring departure aligns with peak activity in forests, moors, and coastal cliffs. Grouse display on open ground, seabirds crowd nesting ledges, woodland species sing through fresh foliage, and longer daylight hours provide generous time for exploring both culture and nature.
